eCitizen Explained: Accessing Kenyan Government Services Online

Kenya's eCitizen platform consolidates hundreds of government services — from business registration and passport applications to NTSA transactions and permits — into a single online doorway. It has removed many physical queues, but introduced a different challenge: knowing exactly how the platform works before you start.
Setting up correctly
Every eCitizen account is tied to your national ID or passport and a verified phone number. One-time codes (OTPs) sent to your phone are the key to your account.
Golden rule: you enter your own passwords and OTPs — always. No legitimate assistant, agent or government office needs your password. Anyone asking for it is a fraud risk.
Major services available
- Business Registration Service (BRS) — name search, reservation, business-name and company registration
- Immigration — passport applications, renewals and replacements
- NTSA — vehicle and driving-licence services
- Land and planning — searches and related services
- Permits and licences — sector-specific approvals
- Tax-adjacent services — links and integrations with KRA processes
Availability continues to expand; check the platform for the current catalogue.
Five traps that stall applications
- Name mismatches — your eCitizen details must match your ID exactly, including middle names.
- Blurry document uploads — photograph documents straight-on, well-lit, with all corners visible.
- Wrong service selected — similar-sounding services have different requirements. Read the service page carefully.
- Abandoned payments — some steps expire if payment is not completed. Finish the payment flow in one session.
- Using someone else's account — spouses, employees and "agents" logging in with your credentials create disputes and security risks.
A sane workflow for any eCitizen application
- Read the service requirements page end to end before uploading anything.
- Prepare clear scans/photos of every required document first.
- Start the application when you have 20–30 uninterrupted minutes.
- Enter credentials yourself; never paste them into a chat.
- Download or screenshot every acknowledgement and receipt.
- Track progress using the reference numbers provided — do not rely on memory.
