What Every Kenyan Business Should Know Before Getting CCTV Installed

A CCTV security camera

Prices for CCTV equipment have fallen dramatically, and most Kenyan businesses — shops, offices, godowns, churches and homes — can now afford a sensible system. The difference between a system that protects you and one that gathers dust comes down to planning.

Analogue vs IP cameras

Analogue (HD over coax) IP (network cameras)
Cost Lower Higher
Image quality Good Excellent
Easy remote viewing With a compatible recorder Built-in
Cabling Coax cable Network cable or Wi-Fi
Best for Small shops, homes Larger premises, detail-critical sites

For most growing SMEs, IP cameras with a Network Video Recorder (NVR) offer the best long-term value.

Placement principles that actually matter

  • Cover entry and exit points first — doors, gates, loading bays
  • Height matters — cameras too high capture tops of heads; too low and they are stolen or blocked
  • Avoid pointing directly at bright light — backlight ruins facial detail
  • Prioritise faces and plates over vast empty yards
  • Protect outdoor cameras with proper housings and sensible cable routing

Remote viewing — the feature people actually want

Modern systems let you watch live footage and review recordings from your phone. Ask your installer:

  • Which app is used, and is it reputable?
  • Who creates and holds the login credentials? (It should be you.)
  • Is the recorder isolated from public internet exposure, or naively port-forwarded?
  • What upload speed does your office need for smooth remote viewing?

Storage maths, in plain terms

Recording quality × number of cameras × hours per day × retention days = storage required. A common mistake is buying a recorder with far too little storage and discovering gaps in footage when it is needed most. Decide how many days of history you genuinely need, then size the hard drive accordingly — or accept motion-only recording to stretch capacity.

Maintenance is not optional

  • Clean outdoor lenses periodically
  • Check recordings monthly — a camera that has silently failed protects nothing
  • Replace ageing power supplies before they fail during a critical period
  • Keep firmware updated where the manufacturer provides updates

Before you hire an installer

Ask for: a site survey, a written camera plan, clear equipment specifications (resolution, night vision type, storage), a quotation separating equipment and labour, and training on using the app and retrieving footage. Any professional installer should provide all five without hesitation.

TeamTech Enterprises designs and installs CCTV systems for Kenyan homes, offices and businesses — with the plan in writing before a single cable is run.
